Racing Rafferty's & The Elephant !!
Big weekend of racing in Lake Macquarie and Port Macquarie!! Well done to everyone!! Great result by all :) Thanks for sharing the experiences!!
Good honest feedback. A few athletes reaching the podium spot as well. Load to take from these experiences and take to the next as this for most was a steppingstone for what's down the track. Be proud of what you achieved and hope you have celebrated the achievement.

What was the goal for the race?
To beat last years time of 04:10
What shoes did you wear?
The best shoes ever made: TOPO Ultraventure 3
What went well?
My headspace and no sprained ankles
What didn't work or went bad?
Hmmmm, nup no negatives.
How did you overcome the challenge?
All positive race day.
What was the best part of the event?
Finishing sub 4hrs and knowing I won’t be coming back 🤣
Did you celebrate?
I did feel proud of myself when I crossed the finish line sub 4 so yes, I personally celebrated my achievement 🎉
What’s next?
A well deserved break/visit up north to see my grandkids then Dungog 20k
ATHLETE INTERVIEW - Deb Alterator Elephant Trail Race
What was the goal for the race?
To survive and enjoy the experience
What shoes did you wear?
Hoka speedboats and dime water wings
What went well?
Getting the legs moving on flats and remembering the cadence training we did on downhills
Also the arrival of my running vest by special Benn delivery was amazing
What didn't work or went bad?
Maybe my choice of seafood chowder the night before …. Otherwise the couple of falls that took my breath and made me take the downhills a little more carefully
How did you overcome the challenge?
Just layed there until I realised nothing was broken and laughed
What was the best part of the event?
The SNL support and the view at the top
We really have the best training team and I am so appreciative
Did you celebrate?
I have chilled the beer that was given to us and we are going to watch the footy and order a pizza
What’s next?
Dungog ???? Then …..
I want to give Tarawerra in February a good nudge
ATHLETE INTERVIEW - Heather Duffy Elephant Trail Race
What was the goal for the race?
Finish without hurting anything!
What shoes did you wear?
Brooks Calderas
What went well?
I just treated it as a Sunday long run, and a challenge as I don’t really enjoy rocky technical stuff, but really pleased with how everything held up.
What didn't work or went bad?
Nothing really.
How did you overcome the challenge?
What was the best part of the event?
The finish.
Did you celebrate?
No. Happy with how it went though.
What’s next?
OCC
Brooklyn Darcy Elephant Trail 13km
What was the goal for the race:
I didn’t really have a goal for this race since I got a last minute entry, I was just hoping to have a good strong run
What shoes did you wear:
I wore the Salomon pulsar pros
What went well:
The second half of my race went well as I was able to over come the feeling of vomiting and needing to 💩 myself. After the tough climb I was able to overcome the sick feeling and smashed the second half of the race
What didn't work or went bad?
My pre race nutrition was bad as we were camping there and were a little unprepared so i ended up eating food that was too heavy on my stomach making me feel like I was going to vomit the first half of the race. This to lead to negative thoughts and made me feel worse
How did you overcome the challenge?
I was thinking of all the people out there running much further doing it a lot tougher than me and how they were still going and hadn’t given up.
What was the best part of the event?
Getting to be a part of Dillon’s crew and watch him smash the miler record
Did you celebrate?
Not really
What’s next?
The YCC in Italy/ France
Melissa Ralph - ATHLETE INTERVIEW - Rafferty’s Coastal Run
What was the goal for the race?
I look forward to the Raffertys run for the atmosphere and scenery, although there is always a hope every time I race that I can do better than the prior year - so I had a plan to achieve better than 4hrs if possible.
What shoes did you wear?
Hoka speedgoats.
What went well?
I was on track at the 1 hour mark and that's when I decided that maybe the sub 4hrs was in reach - from then on I focussed on the plan and was able to come in at 3hrs 55mins.
What didn't work or went bad?
I had a rather impressive stack at the 10.5km mark which meant I ran pretty conservatively over the rock ledge. I thought I'd be able to make that time up on the beach as the sand had been so runnable the year before - but this year the tide was not on our side and the beach was somewhat of a heavy slog!
How did you overcome the challenge?
It meant I really had to focus on climbing well on the gravel hill sections - it was the only part where there was good footing and time to be gained - as most of the flat sections of the course were mud this year.
What was the best part of the event?
The scenery on this run is great, and you always end up chatting to people along the way.
Did you celebrate?
Out to dinner for post-run steak
What’s next?
A change of pace next - off the City2Surf, which is another really fun event
Kristie Stanborough -
ATHLETE INTERVIEW - Gold Coast Half Marathon
What was the goal for the race? Ambitious goal 2:45
What shoes did you wear?
Old Hoka Bondi 8s
What went well?
First 13km were great, sticked to plan. Felt comfortable and confident
What didn't work or went bad?
Bohemian Rhapsody and an emotional mental block that was challenging
How did you overcome the challenge?
Repeating I can, I will, watch me.
Reminding myself I can do hard things.
Here’s Johnny helped too 🤣
What was the best part of the event?
The vibe of the event and the crowd. Seeing my family at the end. Finally doing the event. I was meant to do it as my first half 5years ago but got injured.
I was also reminded of the kindness of strangers and how amazingly supportive our running community is. Thank you Jodie
Did you celebrate?
Yep- SeaWorld and recovery stairs walking up waterslides at wet and wild 🤣
What’s next? Whatever the universe throws at me. My eyes on the prize this year is Kosci 🤞
Matthew Stanborough
ATHLETE INTERVIEW - Gold Coast Marathon
What was the goal for the race?
Only getting a ticket 3 weeks previous my goal was to finish and use it as a genuine training run
What shoes did you wear?
Brooks Glycerin GTS 21’s
What went well?
The first 30kms were perfect pace for my goals. Last 12kms were tough with heat in the first 6 and headwind in the last 6 slowing we up and breaking the rhythm I was in
What didn't work or went bad?
I am not unhappy with any of my run, things to work on but not unhappy with it
How did you overcome the challenge?
Get back to training and work on my goals
What was the best part of the event?
The vibe, the crowds lining the entire course were encouraging at every point on the course
Did you celebrate?
Yeah, a couple of ales and a few ginger beers
What’s next?
Sydney Marathon
